João Goulart
He was a Brazilian Politician and the 24th president of Brazil. He marks the end of a Seemingly democratic rule and the beginning of a military dictatorship. He aspired to be a lawyer because his father wanted him to have a higher education. He graduated separately from his class in 1939 because during his time in school, he acquired a venereal disease, which left his left knee entirely paralyzed Despite this he managed to make many influential friends including then president, Getúlio Vargas He convinced Goulart to run for presidency. One of his opponent had been his future brother-in-law but he quickly gathered more votes than him. Being a protégée of Vargas gave him a great standing in the political world of Brazil. After jumping from position to position, he settled into vice presidency after Vargas committed suicide. Goulart wanted to leave politics forever but returned with some persuasion from leaders in Rio Grande de Sul. He was reelected as vice president in 1960 but along side a different president, named Jânio Quadros. Quadros resigned in a few years, when Goalart was in China, visiting. Many thought Goulart was too radical to be president and were reluctant to recognize him as such. He came back from his trip, insisting that he was already president and managed to come to agreement with the government but his powers would be limited. He made many changes during his presidency that many did not agree with.
